Lenten Music for Voice and Organ on March 27 was an inspiring highlight to our Lenten journey. Many thanks to Leila Mustakos and Mark Sullivan! If you missed this moving event, you can find it here on Youtube. The recital begins after an introduction by me which you should feel free to skip! Be warned that when the recital does begin, while the sound is great, you won't get to see the musicians -- the balcony remains empty. Thanks to today's garden crew -- Michael Haggans and Tony Piscatelli assisted by groundskeeper Paul Ferraro. They tidied the public areas and spread mulch. Be sure to thank them! The flowers are gone, the purple hangings are in place, the word "alleluia" is absent from our worship, prayers of confession return, and we will begin Sunday's 10a.m. service with the Great Litany -- a tradition for the First Sunday in Lent. As the season and the world are confronting the reality of evil, I confess to a bit of delight in the Great Litany's petition, "That it may please thee ... finally to beat down Satan under our feet"! Feel free to drop in for a visit with Cecelia to talk about poetry, theology, or personal concerns during her Monday office hours between Noon and 5p.m. in the Guild Room. Friday's announcements from Guilford Schools Superintendent Dr. Paul Freeman and Guilford First Selectman Matt Hoey indicate that the wearing of masks will no longer be required in Guilford's Schools or Town Hall beginning Monday, February 28. Here's the First Selectman's announcement. Our Worship Options Group and Vestry will follow these developments closely. Please remember that our mutual expectations are based on Jesus' teaching to "Love your neighbor as yourself." And that we have leaned towards greater caution than some gathering places. For the time being, our mutual expectation of mask-wearing during Sunday School, choir practice, and worship -- except for lectors, preachers and soloists -- remains in place. From those conversations, the Committee will discern a group of finalists whom they will present to the Diocese in late March. You can review the whole timeline here, and subscribe here to the Committee's newsletter. Exploring Confirmation with Will Parker ... ... continues this Sunday, February 13 immediately following Holy Communion. This program offers Christ Church High School students the opportunity to consider confirming their baptismal promises with Bishop Ian Douglas in June. What makes this program particularly exciting is that Will's father, the Rev. Andrew Parker, literally wrote the text they'll be using: Keeping the Promise, a curriculum for teenagers thinking about Confirmation in the Episcopal Church. We will present the potential confirmands with their own inscribed copies of The Book of Common Prayer during this Sunday's 10a.m. service. The Path Wraps Up Hebrew Bible This week's "Journey Through the Bible" concludes our time in the Hebrew Scriptures with the stories of Queen Esther, rebuilding the Temple in Jerusalem, and the prophet Ezra summing up our journey so far. We actually hope to have the meeting in early March or April. Thanks to leaders of Parish ministries and programs for all the reports that have been received by the Parish Office. HELP NEEDED, PLEASE DO WHAT YOU CAN A Plea from the Outreach Committee at Christ Church Last night at the Outreach Committee meeting (conducted via Zoom), Cindy McNamara arrived straight from her work at the V.A Hospital and told the rest of us about the extremely trying conditions there. There is a shortage of staff members – doctors, nurses, and respiratory therapists – because so many are out sick with Covid themselves. There is also an acute shortage of blood, both at the V.A. and across the country, resulting in the need for rationing. Winnie Seibert then told of a friend who had recently been diagnosed with leukemia and, on one occasion, could only get half of the blood he needed. WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP? One thing those of us who are not medical professionals can do is to GIVE BLOOD. Click here to find Red Cross Blood Drives in the Guilford area. If you are out of town and would like to give blood – since there is a national shortage – go to the Red Cross web site (https://www.redcrossblood.org/) and enter your zip code to find a Blood Drive near you. Please pass this information on to your friends and relatives. The need is urgent. During these stressful times, we sometimes feel helpless. Giving blood is one simple way we can help those suffering from Covid as well as from other illnesses, and help the medical professionals who have worked so hard and selflessly throughout the pandemic. Christmas Gratitude: Many thanks to all who made our celebrations so special during these challenging times --

Harrison+ First Sunday of Advent, November 28 begins a new year in the life of the Church, and also begins the celebration of Hanukkah for our Jewish neighbors -- another celebration of light against the darkness of the world. Thanks to our Altar Guild team, this Sunday the Advent wreath returns, as do our beautiful indigo hangings and vestments. If you follow these things, we'll move into Year C in the Revised Common Lectionary -- the cycle of readings we share with liturgical English-speaking denominations for Sundays and major holy days, and Year 2 in the Prayer Book's Daily Office lectionary. . "Grateful for All God's Love" -- our Stewardship Program for 2022 -- began to receive our Giving Estimate Cards on Christ the King Sunday, with a powerful and challenging sermon from the Rev. Ellen Tillotson. Thanks to all who offered their Gift Estimates for 2022. As previously noted, we will continue to receive cards throughout Thanksgiving Week and into Advent. Outside of service times, the side door, closest to the Guild Room, is open daily between 10am and 3p.m. so you may have personal prayer-time in the church, and to offer your Giving Estimate on the altar. Gift cards for Thanksgiving Food Baskets -- Again this year, the Guilford Food Bank invites us to provide grocery store gift cards between $10 and $25 for their Holiday Food Basket program. The Food Bank will provide supported households “with a turkey, fresh vegetables and a gift card for participants to purchase their own non-perishables according to their own dietary needs and family traditions.” Your gifts may be left on the altar, placed in an offering basin, or delivered to the Parish Office. Please make checks payable to Christ Church with "Food Basket" on the memo line, and we'll purchase cards for you. This is the Guilford Food Bank’s one appeal to support their food basket programs for both Thanksgiving and Christmas. Thanks to all who have responded so generously! From Cecelia: Poetry Retreat/Poetry Table Hello Christ Church! As a lover of the arts and creativity, I often find that one of the ways I most easily connect with God is while reading or writing poetry. There's just something about these little packets of words that seem to hit right where and when I need them to. Poetry, for me, is often an answer to prayer and it is a gift I would love to bring to Christ Church during my time here. That being said, you can look forward to a poetry table located under the balcony with copies of poems on different topics that I hope God may use to speak into your life. Additionally, you can look forward to a Poetry Retreat, now moved to Saturday December 11th from 11-1 where we will talk and experiment in more depth with the ways poetry can connect us with God, each other, and ourselves.
