Concertato Our annual recital series runs from Fall through Spring. Recent performers have included the celebrated Nash Baroque Ensemble, violinist and frequent NPR performer Fritz Gearhart, and nationally known jazz pianist (and Guilford's own) Donn Trenner, as well as performances of chamber music, opera, and musical theatre. The 2015–16 series will include the noted baritone Mark Rehnstrom in works of Britten, Schubert, and others. 2015–16 Concertato Events April 23 7:30 PM Concertato presents noted baritone Mark Rehnstrom in recital! The Christ Church, Guilford, Concertato series resumes on Sat. April 27 at 7:30 when noted baritone Mark Rehnstrom, accompanied by Christ Church Music Director Mark Sullivan, will present a recital featuring Britten, Schubert, and original compositions. New York city-based baritone Mark Rehnstrom has appeared as soloist with orchestras and opera companies throughout the United States. As the centerpiece of his program, Mr. Rehnstrom will sing Benjamin Britten's “Songs and Proverbs of William Blake,” a continuos twenty-five minute song cycle based on selections from Blake's “Songs of Innocence,” “Auguries of Innocence,” and “Proverbs of Hell,” and including the well known “The Tyger” (“Tyger! Tyger! Burning bright...) The music is evocative and challenging; while it is almost always 'tonal' it can also be challengingly dissonant, as Britten strives to express the intensity of Blake's verses. Fans of Blake, Britten, and wonderfully expressive singing will not want to miss this concert!
The program will also feature beautiful and well-known Schubert songs including “Heidenröslein” and “Ganymed,” as well as several of Mr. Rehnstrom's compositions.
